Very true! While many parents may think they're complimenting their children, beauty is actually often discouraged. And for good reason, since attractiveness can put a daughter at risk.

Yes, there are parents who selfishly sabotage their daughters, by manipulating their sense of self-worth to keep them dependent and needy. But even a parent with the best intentions at heart (e.g. protecting their child, or fostering other important skills in their child, so that they don't rely on beauty) can do real damage.
