This was such a fascinating read, Joe! I only saw Birdcage a couple years ago. Remember liking Priscilla as well, though I was quite small when I saw it. To me, they were fun and wholesome and all that. So it was certainly very interesting to imagine, through this, what it meant about the LGBT community at the time these films first came out.

I'm glad you stopped taking things seriously. I'm also glad that the world has changed so that someone like me (in my early 20s) can look at a movie like that already knowing okay, that's not representative of all gay men or of that community in general. See, to me it didn't even occur to think "oh, that's gay men then". I'm guessing it's because there's so much more representation and it's become such a common occurrence in culture and entertainment for people not to link the word gay to that one gay movie they saw, you know?
